In Spain, a court sent a lottery seller to prison who hid a winning ticket worth €4.7 million
A lottery seller in Spain was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for fraud related to a jackpot winning ticket worth 4.7 million euros, which was drawn in 2012. This was reported by Reuters.
The court in the northwestern Spanish city of La Coruña found that the seller was aware of the large win by the customer but deliberately gave him false information about the absence of winning tickets. After that, he tried to claim the prize himself, stating that he had found the winning ticket in his store.
The local lottery administration then did not make the payment, and the ticket was temporarily seized to clarify the circumstances of its ownership. Over eight years, the seller repeatedly tried to obtain the winnings.
The true owner of the ticket died in 2014. The court ruled that the winnings must be paid in full to his heirs.
The seller was found guilty of fraud with aggravating circumstances. The court decision is not yet final and can be appealed to the Supreme Court.
