The USA and Iran Signed a War Ceasefire Agreement
US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding that provides for the cessation of war and the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz.
The American leader signed the memorandum during dinner in Versailles, White House Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles reported.
“The G7 was a huge success and an opportunity to ensure that members and other participants see ‘America First’ in action. The trip ended with a wonderful dinner and celebration of President Trump's birthday in Versailles […] No one works harder. President Trump signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Iranians during dinner,” she said.
Wiles emphasized that “the next 60 days will be challenging” as the parties still need to agree on important details of the actual peace agreement.
What the USA and Iran Agreement Provides
The memorandum signed by the USA and Iran consists of 14 points. In addition to the immediate ceasefire on all fronts, lifting the naval blockade, and restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, it provides for the removal of oil sanctions on Iran and the withdrawal of American troops from areas around the Islamic Republic.
Furthermore, the agreement provides for granting Iran $300 billion for reconstruction, unblocking $24 billion of Iranian funds, as well as 60-day negotiations on a final agreement regarding the nuclear program. Iran has committed not to produce nuclear weapons.
