A French student was fined in Singapore for licking a juice straw for an Instagram video
In Singapore, the court sentenced 19-year-old French student Didier Gaspar Owen Maximilian, who took a juice straw from a vending machine, licked it, and put it back.
For disturbing public order, the young man was fined 600 Singapore dollars, which is approximately 20 thousand hryvnias, reports CNN.
Besides the financial penalty, the consequences for the student could be more serious. Singapore’s immigration service must decide whether he can continue studying at the local business school.
The student’s defender explained that the incident was an attempt to create entertaining content for social media. According to him, after filming the video, the student took the used straw and drank his own beverage through it.
The lawyer also noted that his client admitted guilt and sincerely regrets his actions and the consequences they caused.
Meanwhile, the prosecution emphasized that such actions could undermine public trust in the sanitary safety of vending machines, which are widely used in Singapore. That is why prosecutors asked the court to impose the maximum possible fine of 2,000 Singapore dollars (almost 70 thousand hryvnias), but the court chose a milder punishment.
As reported by the "Judicial and Legal Newspaper", in spring, the then 18-year-old youth licked a straw from an orange juice vending machine and returned it to the dispenser. He was accused of hooliganism and creating a public danger in Singapore.
