The season of intensified cholera surveillance has begun in Ukraine – how to protect yourself
In Ukraine, the season of intensified epidemiological surveillance for cholera will last from June to October. During this period, specialists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will carry out a range of measures to timely detect possible cases of the disease and prevent its spread. This was reported by the Kyiv City Health Department.
What measures specialists are taking
During intensified epidemiological surveillance, laboratory testing is performed on patients with severe or atypical courses of acute intestinal infections. Monitoring studies of environmental objects are also conducted to detect the circulation of cholera vibrio.
A separate area of work is training medical workers on prevention, diagnosis, and response to possible cholera cases. In addition, specialists assess risks related to drinking water quality, food safety, and the overall sanitary-epidemiological situation.
Disease situation
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, from January 1 to May 26, 2026, 68,749 cases of cholera have been registered worldwide.
At the same time, no cases of the disease have been recorded in Ukraine during this period.
Why cholera is dangerous
Cholera is an acute intestinal infection most often transmitted through contaminated water or food. The disease can quickly cause severe dehydration of the body, but with early detection and timely treatment, it is curable.
How to protect yourself from infection
Specialists recommend following simple preventive measures:
- do not buy food, especially fish, from informal markets;
- do not swim or fish in polluted water bodies;
- wash hands thoroughly before preparing and eating food, as well as after using the toilet;
- use safe water for drinking and cooking;
- wash vegetables and fruits before consumption;
- ensure sufficient thermal processing of food products.
When to see a doctor
If symptoms of acute intestinal infection appear, including severe diarrhea, vomiting, or signs of dehydration, seek medical help immediately. Intensified epidemiological surveillance is designed to ensure a rapid response to any suspected cases of the disease.
