During the summer period, the risk of food poisoning increases significantly. High air temperatures create favorable conditions for the rapid multiplication of bacteria in food products. Even food that looks fresh and smells normal can pose a health hazard.

Which products spoil the fastest

The most dangerous products in the heat are those containing protein and moisture:

  • meat and meat products;
  • sausages, pâtés;
  • fish and seafood;
  • milk and fermented dairy products;
  • soft cheeses;
  • eggs and dishes made from them;
  • salads with mayonnaise;
  • cream pastries and cakes;
  • ready meals that have been left without refrigeration for a long time.

Special attention should be paid to products purchased at informal markets or those sold without proper refrigeration equipment.

How to avoid food poisoning

To reduce the risk of food poisoning in summer, it is important to follow simple safety rules. Before preparing and consuming food, wash your hands thoroughly, and rinse vegetables, fruits, and berries under running water. Do not consume products past their expiration date or those stored improperly. Perishable products should be kept in the refrigerator, and ready meals should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours, or more than one hour during hot weather. It is also recommended to use separate cutting boards and knives for raw meat and ready-to-eat products and to consume only safe drinking water.

Main symptoms

Symptoms of food poisoning can appear within a few hours or several days after consuming poor-quality food. They most often manifest as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or cramps, fever, general weakness, and headache.

In case of such symptoms, first of all, it is necessary to prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of water, rehydration solutions, or unsweetened tea. Until the condition improves, it is advisable to avoid fatty, spicy, and heavy foods and later follow a light diet. If symptoms do not subside or the condition worsens, seek medical help.

When urgent medical help is needed

Urgent medical consultation is required in cases of high fever, presence of blood in stools, severe dehydration, continuous vomiting, loss of consciousness, or sudden deterioration of health. Special care should be taken if poisoning symptoms appear in young children, pregnant women, elderly people, or individuals with chronic diseases.

Following basic hygiene rules and proper food storage will help significantly reduce the risk of food poisoning during the hot summer period.
