How to "Legalize" a Certificate Issued Abroad: Apostille, Translation, and One More Mandatory Step
If a birth certificate or marriage certificate is issued abroad, before submitting the documents in Ukraine, it must be properly processed.
The first step is to affix an apostille or undergo consular legalization. An apostille is applied when the country issuing the document is a participant in the Hague Convention. If the country has not joined this convention, consular legalization is required. At the same time, international treaties on legal assistance between Ukraine and certain countries may cancel the requirement for legalization or apostille of documents.
The second step is to translate the document into Ukrainian. If the translation is done abroad, it must be certified by a consul or diplomatic representative of Ukraine. If the translation is done on the territory of Ukraine, it must be notarized.
Also, the original foreign certificate must be submitted, without which the document cannot be accepted for consideration. In addition, an identity document is attached, usually a passport or another official identification document.
This procedure ensures the legal validity of foreign documents when used in Ukraine, experts from the passport service noted.
