Pension in 2026: What Awaits Ukrainians Who Have Only 5 Years of Work Experience

In Ukraine, the size of the future pension and even the very right to receive it directly depend not only on a person's age but also on the amount of officially accumulated insurance work experience. Due to working without formal employment, prolonged stays abroad, or employers not paying contributions to the Pension Fund, more and more Ukrainians risk being left without a full pension in old age.

In 2026, to retire at the age of 65, it is necessary to have at least 15 years of insurance work experience. This threshold is the minimum for pension payments by age. If a person has officially worked only 5 years, they will not be able to receive a regular pension, as the pension formula does not apply in this case.

What Ukrainians without the required work experience will receive

Citizens who have not accumulated the minimum 15 years of insurance work experience may be eligible for state social assistance. This payment does not depend on the person's previous salary and is significantly lower than the minimum pension.

Social assistance is granted to Ukrainians who have reached the age of 65, permanently reside in Ukraine, and do not have significant income or other state benefits.

In 2026, the amount of social assistance for people without sufficient work experience is 2,595 hryvnias per month. The amount is tied to the subsistence minimum for persons who have lost their ability to work, the Pension Fund reminds.

Is it possible to increase insurance work experience

Ukrainians are advised to regularly check their insurance work experience data, as sometimes employers do not pay contributions or make errors in reporting. In some cases, certain periods of work can be confirmed with documents or through court.

Additionally, Ukrainians can voluntarily pay contributions to the Pension Fund to increase the number of years of work experience. In 2026, the minimum voluntary contribution is about 1,902 hryvnias per month. If it is necessary to compensate for previous years without work experience, the contribution amount doubles.

As a result, one year of insurance work experience may cost approximately 45,000 hryvnias, so before "buying" work experience, it is worth assessing how financially beneficial it will be.
