Poplar fluff causes allergies and fires: The Cabinet of Ministers is urged to declare a fight against it
Ukrainians are calling on the authorities to strengthen the fight against poplar fluff due to its negative impact on people's health and increased fire hazard. A relevant petition has appeared on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
The author of the appeal emphasizes that every year during the spring-summer period, Ukrainian cities suffer from a large amount of poplar fluff, which causes discomfort to citizens, worsens air quality, and can provoke allergic reactions.
The petition states that about 30% of the population may suffer from seasonal allergic manifestations related to pollen and irritants carried by the fluff. Medical professionals also warn that poplar fluff can irritate mucous membranes and carry pollen from other plants, causing coughing, sneezing, tearing, and asthma exacerbations.
Separately, the author draws attention to the fire hazard: in hot weather, fluff easily ignites even from a small source of fire, which annually leads to local fires in yards, parks, and near residential buildings.
Among the main demands of the petition are:
— gradual replacement of old fluffy poplars with less allergenic trees;
— restriction of planting fluffy poplars in populated areas;
— enhanced seasonal cleaning of fluff;
— funding for the renewal of green spaces;
— conducting informational campaigns about allergies and fire safety.
The author of petition No. 41/009990-26ep believes that implementing these measures will help improve the environmental situation and reduce seasonal health problems of Ukrainians.
