Can a person obtain category C without category B — explanation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs service center
The Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs explained whether it is mandatory to first obtain category B and only then open category C.
Is category B required to open category C
The answer is no, it is not required.
Current legislation does not establish a mandatory requirement to first obtain category B to open category C. That is, a citizen can undergo training and obtain the right to drive cargo vehicles without having a category B driver's license.
This is provided by the provisions of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Resolution No. 340, according to which a driver's license can be issued for the first time immediately for the right to drive vehicles of categories A1, A, B1, B, C1, C, and other categories according to established requirements.
What does category C grant
Category C grants the right to drive vehicles with a permitted maximum weight exceeding 7,500 kg, as well as vehicles with a trailer whose permitted maximum weight does not exceed 750 kg.
This category is necessary for driving most cargo trucks and often becomes an important step for those planning to work in the field of freight transportation.
What is needed to obtain category C
To obtain a category C driver's license, it is necessary to:
- be at least 18 years old;
- complete training at an accredited educational institution;
- successfully pass theoretical and practical exams at the Ministry of Internal Affairs service center;
- receive a driver's license of the corresponding category.
What is important to remember
For some vehicle categories, the legislation provides additional requirements regarding driving experience or previously opened categories. For example, to open categories BE or CE, it is already necessary to have the respective categories B or C opened.
