Bioethanol in gasoline: the government assured that fuel will not become more expensive from July 1
Gasoline at Ukrainian gas stations is not expected to become more expensive after the introduction on July 1, 2026, of the mandatory requirement to add at least 7% bioethanol to gasoline according to the E10 standard. Some gas station networks are already selling fuel with bioethanol without increasing prices, and in some cases, it costs less than regular gasoline. This was reported by the Ministry of Economy.
As noted by the ministry, bioethanol is produced in Ukraine, which allows reducing logistics costs and maintaining an affordable fuel cost. The use of bioethanol is a common practice in European Union countries, and most cars in Ukraine are technically ready for such fuel. In particular, engines manufactured after 2000 are already designed for gasoline with a bioethanol blend.
The ministry also dispelled concerns about a possible corn shortage or impact on the food market. To produce the estimated annual volume of bioethanol at the level of 200–300 thousand tons, approximately 600–800 thousand tons of corn are needed. At the same time, the annual production of this crop in Ukraine is about 30 million tons, so, according to government estimates, this will not affect food security.
It is also noted separately that during the production of bioethanol, high-protein feed is generated, which can be used in animal husbandry, potentially contributing to reducing meat production costs.
Moreover, the new requirements will not create additional difficulties for farmers regarding fuel storage, since agricultural machinery mostly runs on diesel fuel.
The ministry also emphasized the export potential of bioethanol. According to available estimates, production capacities in Ukraine already allow manufacturing at least twice as much bioethanol as needed for the domestic market, which forms a promising direction for export.
