Some Ukrainian pensioners can count on additional monthly payments thanks to the status of honorary donor. Legislation provides a special pension supplement for citizens who have received the badge and certificate "Honorary Donor of Ukraine" or "Honorary Donor of the USSR."

Any adult Ukrainian who has successfully passed a medical examination and has no contraindications for donation can become a blood donor. At the same time, to obtain honorary status, it is necessary to donate blood or its components free of charge in legally established volumes. The title is awarded to persons who have donated at least 40 maximum allowable doses of blood, no less than 60 doses of plasma, or 40 doses of blood cells, including erythrocytes, leukocytes, or platelets.

For holders of such status, a special pension supplement is provided. Its amount is 10% of the subsistence minimum per person. Since the amount is tied to social standards, it is reviewed along with changes in budget indicators. In 2026, the monthly supplement for honorary donors is 321 hryvnias.

However, this payment is not assigned automatically. To arrange it, a pensioner must apply to the Pension Fund of Ukraine and submit the appropriate application. Along with the application, it is necessary to provide an identity document, the taxpayer registration number, and the honorary donor certificate.

The procedure for granting benefits to donors underwent significant changes after the Law "On the Safety and Quality of Donor Blood and Blood Components" came into force, which was adopted as part of harmonizing Ukrainian legislation with European Union standards.

From January 25, 2026, for persons who acquire the status of honorary donor after this date, a number of previously provided benefits will no longer apply. These include an additional paid day off after donating blood, increased payments during temporary disability, special scholarship supplements, and pension supplements for honorary donor status.

At the same time, the changes did not affect citizens who obtained the honorary donor status before January 25, 2026. They retain the right to all previously assigned payments, including the monthly pension supplement of 10% of the subsistence minimum.

As a reminder, the "Judicial and Legal Newspaper" wrote that Ukraine intends to strengthen responsibility for violations of blood donation rules — from non-compliance with blood storage and testing technologies to its transfer to unauthorized medical institutions. Officials may face fines up to 34 thousand hryvnias, and for repeated violations — even a ban on holding certain positions.
