113 Underground Schools Are Being Built in Ukraine: Most Will Open by September 1 — Ministry of Education
Ukraine continues to implement a large-scale project to create underground schools designed to ensure a safe educational process during the war. Currently, 113 such facilities are being built in various regions of the country, with most planned to open before the start of the new school year. This was reported by the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, in an interview with Radio Liberty.
According to him, construction work is ongoing continuously, and the readiness of the facilities is at different stages. At the same time, more than 60% of the underground schools are expected to be completed by September 1, allowing a significant number of children to return to in-person learning in safe conditions.
The minister noted that currently more than a hundred underground schools are already operational and accepting students. Additionally, about a hundred more such educational spaces have recently been put into operation.
The Ministry of Education also aims to create conditions for underground learning for approximately 100,000 schoolchildren. However, this number may change depending on the security situation and migration processes.
Oksen Lisovyi emphasized that for small communities, even one modern underground school can be an important solution to maintain access to education. However, the issue of safe transportation of children to schools remains relevant.
According to the minister, the state continues to implement a program to provide schools with buses, transferring one or several vehicles to institutions. At the same time, due to security risks in certain regions, organizing student transportation remains a challenging task. Despite this, the purchase of school buses continues.
