Modern criminal justice in Ukraine and EU countries is increasingly moving away from the principle of "simply isolating." The goal is not only to punish but to give a chance for correction and prevent new crimes through the resocialization of the convicted person. This was reported by the Ministry of Justice.

The ministry reminded that punishments involving the isolation of convicts from society include arrest, restriction of liberty, imprisonment for a certain term, and life imprisonment. However, the justice system also allows for other types of punishments that are not related to imprisonment or complete isolation from society. Here is what they are.

Economic Impact and Restrictions on Rights

These measures hit the "wallet" or career opportunities, which is often more effective in preventing repeat offenses:

- Fine: a monetary penalty that can be imposed as a primary or additional punishment.

- Confiscation of property: compulsory free seizure of all or part of the convict's property into state ownership.

- Deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities: prohibition to work in government bodies, medicine, or drive a vehicle for a specified period.

Moral and Status Punishments

Applied as additional punishments for serious crimes and deprive a person of special social recognition:

- Deprivation of military, special rank, grade, or qualification class.

- Deprivation of a state award of Ukraine: a moral sanction for betrayal of the trust of the state and society.

Correction Through Labor and Supervision

Alternative measures that allow a person to remain part of the community and even benefit it:

- Community service: the person works a certain number of hours for the benefit of the community (street cleaning, landscaping, etc.). This is direct compensation to society for the harm caused and an effective way to foster responsibility through labor.

- Correctional labor: deduction of part of the earnings to the state income from the convict's main place of work.

- Probation supervision: the convict is under the control of the probation authority without isolation from society, performs court-mandated duties, and may participate in probation programs aimed at resocialization and preventing repeat offenses.

Types of Punishments Considering the Specifics of Military Service

This type of sanction includes:

- Service restrictions: temporary prohibition on receiving next ranks and deduction of part of monetary allowance.

- Detention in a disciplinary battalion: a special type of punishment for servicemen applied in cases provided by law.
