Prime Minister of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko announced that on June 15 the government will make a decision on the urgent allocation of funds from the reserve fund for the conservation of the damaged roof and its further restoration of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

She recalled that the Lavra was attempted to be destroyed for the second time — just like in 1941.

“Fortunately, we will not have to rebuild the Ukrainian shrine from the foundation.

The restoration of the Assumption Cathedral and the necessary funding for this were discussed today with the President. The government will provide the necessary financing for the restoration works. A decision will be made today on the urgent allocation of funds from the reserve fund for the conservation of the damaged roof and its further restoration.

We expect a reaction from international organizations to this latest barbaric act by Russia. I instructed the Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy, Tetiana Berezhna, to intensify this work, including involving the capabilities of the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund,” she said.

Svyrydenko added that since early morning she has been receiving numerous messages from representatives of Ukrainian business and philanthropists who want to join the restoration of the shrine.

As previously reported, on the night of June 15, during a massive combined attack by the Russian Federation on Kyiv, a large fire broke out on the territory of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. According to the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, the fire was preliminarily caused by a direct hit.

The fire engulfed the roof of the Assumption Cathedral, and the fire area, according to the State Emergency Service, reached about 800 square meters. The Kyiv City Military Administration reported significant damage on the shrine’s territory.

Additionally, the General Director of the National Reserve "Kyiv Pechersk Lavra," Maksym Ostapenko, stated that after the Russian attack on Kyiv, there is a threat to the interior decoration of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, including the paintings, frescoes, and iconostasis of the Assumption Cathedral.

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is under enhanced protection according to the Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
