Ukraine continues the modernization of its energy system and preparation for the upcoming heating season. One of the key tasks is to restore energy capacity to the 2014 level — 54 GW of installed capacity. This was reported by the Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal during a meeting of the Council on Entrepreneurship Support.

According to him, Ukrainian energy currently serves as a system that ensures the state's resilience during the war and creates a foundation for reconstruction and economic growth after its end.

Among the main priorities of the Ministry of Energy, he named preparation for winter, which includes restoration and protection of energy infrastructure, as well as the construction of new distributed generation. In addition, the Energy Strategy is being updated jointly with the World Bank, and reforms in the sector are being implemented.

Shmyhal noted that Ukraine is building an updated energy system based on the principle of "energy hundreds," where each element can operate autonomously and independently. According to the updated strategy, the country plans to return to the figure of 54 GW of installed capacity that the energy system had in 2014.

According to him, nuclear energy will remain the foundation of the future energy system. At the same time, renewable energy sources and distributed generation will play an important role.

A competition has also been announced for the construction of 1.5 GW of new generation capacity. For this purpose, the Ministry of Energy has already created the appropriate commission. Separately, the quota for supporting renewable energy sources has been increased to 1 GW for the current year.

In addition, Ukraine is implementing direct PPA contracts for electricity purchases. According to the minister, there are already first examples of using this cooperation mechanism, and businesses are encouraged to actively use this tool.
