Water bills for Ukrainians may increase significantly this summer. In several cities, new tariffs have already come into effect, and in some communities the cost of water supply and sewage services has exceeded 100 UAH per cubic meter. At the same time, dozens of water utilities across the country have initiated another price review, explaining this by increased production costs and the need to update worn-out infrastructure.

After the transfer of powers to set tariffs from the National Commission for Energy and Utilities Regulation to local self-government bodies, decisions on price changes are increasingly made at the community level.

Municipal enterprises explain the need to raise tariffs by a significant increase in costs for electricity, water treatment reagents, employee wages, and the necessity to modernize worn networks. In many cities, water supply and sewage systems require substantial investments to maintain stable operation.

As of early June, the highest tariffs for centralized water supply and sewage have already been recorded in several settlements. For example, in Pavlohrad consumers pay 113 UAH per cubic meter of water including sewage. In Drohobych the tariff is 87.30 UAH, in Voznesensk – 71.44 UAH, in Zaporizhzhia – 69.37 UAH, and in Chernivtsi – 63.56 UAH per cubic meter.

An even more noticeable increase will be for residents of Borodianka. According to the village council's decision, from July 1 the tariff for centralized water supply will be 56.76 UAH per cubic meter, and for sewage – 82.58 UAH. The total cost of services will reach 139.34 UAH per cubic meter.

For comparison, a family of four on average consumes about 10 cubic meters of water per month. Under the new tariffs, water supply and sewage alone may cost over 1,300 UAH monthly.

At the same time, in many cities the tariff review process is still ongoing. Local water utilities have already submitted economic justifications for new rates, and final decisions are to be made by local council deputies.

Among the cities considering tariff increases are Vinnytsia, where the cost of services may rise to 81.01 UAH per cubic meter. In Dnipro, the estimated tariff is 86.83 UAH, in Odesa – over 90 UAH, in Uzhhorod – more than 96 UAH, and in Ternopil – almost 99 UAH per cubic meter.

New tariffs are also expected in Kryvyi Rih – about 78 UAH per cubic meter, Lutsk – 73.25 UAH, and Uman, where the cost may exceed 130 UAH per cubic meter.

As reported by the "Judicial and Legal Newspaper", in Odesa the branch of "Infoksvodokanal" published a draft of new tariffs for the population. In Kyiv, official decisions on tariff increases have not yet been made. For the capital's residents, current tariffs will apply this summer — about 16.16 UAH per cubic meter for water supply and 14.22 UAH per cubic meter for sewage.

How to reduce water expenses and pay less

Saving water in an apartment is not only a way to reduce utility costs but also an important contribution to preserving natural resources. Many people do not even notice how much water is wasted daily due to habits or plumbing malfunctions.

One of the most effective ways to reduce water consumption is timely elimination of leaks. Even a small drip from a faucet or toilet tank can lead to significant water loss over a month. It is also worth installing modern mixers and aerators that mix water with air and allow reducing water use without losing comfort.

When brushing teeth, shaving, or washing hands, the tap should not be left open. Such simple actions help save tens of liters of water daily. Similarly, when washing dishes, it is advisable to first soap all the dishes and then rinse off the detergent.

Washing and dishwashing machines should be run only when fully loaded. Modern household appliances use water much more efficiently than hand washing, but maximum savings are achieved only with full loads.

A shower usually requires less water than filling a bathtub. Reducing shower time by even a few minutes can significantly decrease water consumption without noticeable inconvenience.

It is also useful to monitor meter readings and analyze your own consumption. This helps to notice unusual increases in usage in time and detect possible plumbing problems.
