By the decision of the Central Expert Qualification Commission under the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, two forensic experts of the National Scientific Center "Institute of Forensic Expertise named after Honored Prof. M. S. Bokarius" were awarded the qualification of forensic expert in specialty 20.1 "Anthropological Research." This was reported by the Ministry of Justice.

"As a result, the National Scientific Center for Forensic Expertise became the first institution in Ukraine authorized to conduct forensic identification of persons by craniofacial superimposition methods using modern specialized software Skeleton-ID. This software package is used by law enforcement and government agencies in various countries around the world as a modern tool for research in the field of physical and forensic anthropology," the Ministry stated.

Within specialty 20.1, specialists of the National Scientific Center for Forensic Expertise will be able to establish the identity of a person by craniofacial superimposition methods, namely, by comparing photographs or video frames of an unknown person with a skull provided for examination (its 3D model). This approach is especially important in cases where conducting DNA analysis or fingerprint identification is impossible or significantly complicated.

The introduction of anthropological research strengthens the capabilities of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine in the field of identifying the deceased, particularly in wartime conditions, and will also contribute to forming an evidentiary base for national and international investigations of war crimes.

"For consultations regarding anthropological research, identification of persons by skeletal remains, and other types of forensic examinations, please contact the National Scientific Center for Forensic Expertise at: Kharkiv, Zolochivska St., 8-A, or by phone +38 (057) 372-12-20 or email [email protected]," the Ministry added.
