In Sumy region, a drunk driver caused an accident in which his one-month-old son died — he will be prosecuted
In the Sumy region, the pre-trial investigation was completed regarding a 27-year-old man accused of violating traffic rules while intoxicated, which led to the death of his one-month-old son. The indictment has already been sent to court.
According to the Sumy Prosecutor’s Office, the accident occurred on May 14, 2026, around 11:30 PM in Okhtyrka. The man was driving a Honda car, in which his wife and three children were present.
At one of the intersections, the driver, attempting to overtake a vehicle moving in the same direction, entered the oncoming traffic lane, where he collided with a BMW. After the impact, the car veered off the road and crashed into parked vehicles.
As a result of the accident, the one-month-old boy died. A three-year-old child also sustained bodily injuries.
According to the investigation, the driver was behind the wheel while intoxicated. He is charged with violating traffic safety rules that caused a person’s death. The article’s sanction provides for a punishment of imprisonment for a term of five to ten years.
As previously reported by the "Judicial and Legal Newspaper", a resident of Khmelnytskyi district was convicted for a traffic accident during which he hit two minors at an unregulated pedestrian crossing and left the scene without providing assistance to the victims. This was reported by the Khmelnytskyi City District Court.
According to the case materials, on November 1 last year, around 4:30 PM, the man, driving a Volkswagen Passat and moving along Kamianetska Street from Ternopilska Street, did not reduce speed before the unregulated pedestrian crossing and did not stop to let people pass. As a result, he hit two minor pedestrians born in 2009 and 2010.
