In the USA, police officers received AI body cameras that can translate conversations into 50 languages
In the USA, police officers in Stockton (California) are now equipped with body cameras that can translate conversations in real time, making the city one of the first major law enforcement agencies in California to implement this technology department-wide, reports CBS News.
Stockton Police Chief Stanley McFadden explained why the department decided to introduce the new AI-based translation technology from Axon after officers have been using body cameras for ten years.
“The ability to offer something like this to our diverse community is a real game changer,” said McFadden.
The department issued AI body cameras to more than 300 sworn officers. This decision was made in a city considered one of the most diverse in the USA, where nearly half of the population speaks a language other than English at home.
“This is the main reason why we got this technology — to serve everyone,” McFadden noted.
According to the police chief, language barriers can create difficulties during emergency calls and investigations, which Stockton officers regularly face.
“With support for over 50 languages, this will help us receive information faster and relay it more promptly to our officers arriving at the scene,” said Officer David Scott.
The technology is designed to help police communicate in situations where every second counts and waiting for a translator is impractical.
“It allows us to obtain critically important information that can save lives,” emphasized McFadden.
Once activated, the body camera can detect the language of the interlocutor, translate it in real time, and provide two-way communication between officers and community members.
“It simply optimizes our work. Information will come much faster. This will help relay data to officers arriving at the call so they can respond appropriately,” Scott said.
