Two trains collided in the UK: driver killed, 89 people injured
On June 19, near Bedford in the UK, two passenger trains collided, resulting in the death of the driver, The Guardian reports.
The accident involved two East Midlands Railway trains: the service from Corby to London St Pancras, which departed at 4:40 PM, and the train from Nottingham to London, which left at 3:50 PM. The collision occurred near the Elstow interchange between the A421 and A6 roads. Emergency services, including air ambulance helicopters, were on the scene.
It is noted that 89 people were injured in the incident: 11 suffered serious injuries, another 22 were severely wounded. The remaining 56 passengers sustained minor injuries.
According to RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey, the deceased was the train driver and a former union representative.
Authorities declared a major emergency, and the circumstances of the accident will be established during a full investigation.
