How to Ride an Electric Scooter Safely — Useful Tips
In the first five months of 2026, the number of traffic accidents (crashes) involving electric scooters increased by 66.8% compared to the same period in 2025. In this regard, Ukrainians were given several tips on how to ride an electric scooter safely.
How to protect yourself and others
When you get on an electric scooter or other light electric transport (unicycle, hoverboard, etc.) — remember that your actions affect the safety of your health and the people around you, emphasizes the Public Health Center.
Follow traffic rules and simple safety measures:
- wear a helmet — it can save your life;
- cross the road on foot, leading the electric scooter by hand;
- move along bike lanes or keep to the right edge of the roadway;
- reduce speed near pedestrians;
- use hand signals to indicate turns or stops;
- use reflective elements during dark hours.
What not to do:
- do not use your phone or headphones while riding;
- do not ride on sidewalks or pedestrian paths;
- do not use an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol;
- do not carry passengers.
Currently, these safety measures are recommended. However, soon they may become mandatory, and users of electric scooters may be held accountable for violations.
Electric scooter — a full participant in road traffic
This is the definition proposed by the new government bill No. 3023, which the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Transport and Infrastructure recommends for adoption by the Verkhovna Rada. The bill was developed in response to urgent challenges, as the number of electric scooters in Ukrainian cities is rapidly increasing, along with the number of related traffic accidents. It regulates the use of personal light electric transport in Ukraine, taking into account the experience of European countries.
According to the bill, electric scooter users will be required to:
- travel on bicycle lanes and bike paths (if absent — on the right edge of the roadway or shoulder);
- move in the same direction as traffic flow;
- use lighting and reflective elements during dark hours and in conditions of poor visibility.
While using electric scooters and other types of personal light electric transport, it will be prohibited to:
- be under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
- use a mobile phone (hold it in hand) while riding;
- carry passengers if not provided for by the vehicle's design.
After the law is adopted, age restrictions, permissible speed limits, and fines for violations will also be established.
