A Step Towards Robotaxi: Remote Car Control Testing Begins in Ukraine
The company Uklon has begun research and pilot testing of remote control technology, which will eventually involve the implementation of Autonomous Vehicles (driverless cars), including robotaxis.
“Together with the government, we are ready to jointly develop a roadmap for AV development and create the prerequisites for introducing innovations that will change the future of Ukrainian mobility,” emphasized Uklon CEO Serhii Hryshkov, writes “Interfax-Ukraine.”
The first phase of the project will involve testing remotely controlled cars in real conditions using special software: sensors, cameras, lidar, monitors, computer, mobile network including LTE and Starlink, as well as the control station itself.
The project is being implemented in partnership with the international airport “Boryspil,” on whose territory the testing platform was created.
The company explains that the “remote driving” technology allows a driver to control a car remotely using a special station equipped with three screens that display the road situation in real time.
The company’s team spent more than six months preparing for the testing. A partner has now been selected to provide the technological solution. This is the Estonian company Elmo, whose products are certified in Europe.
In addition, equipment adapted for cars has been purchased.
Driver training lasted over 40 hours, during which more than 500 km were covered. Uklon partner drivers were involved in the testing.
The company hopes to implement the technology in less than a year.
