Former USA Gymnastics Team Doctor Sentenced to 175 Years in Prison
In the United States, following an unprecedented seven-day trial during which more than 150 young women publicly testified about sexual abuse committed by Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar, former doctor of the USA Gymnastics team, the judge sentenced him to imprisonment for up to 175 years, reports NBC News.
According to the investigation, he sexually abused athletes for decades under the guise of medical procedures. In total, more than 150 women and girls reported abuse by him, and later the number of known victims exceeded 250.
In addition to the 175-year sentence for sexual abuse, Nassar also received a federal sentence — 60 years in prison for possession of child pornography and evidence tampering. The court ruled that the sentences will be served consecutively, effectively guaranteeing him a life sentence.
In 2024, the US Department of Justice agreed to pay nearly $139 million in compensation to victims due to the FBI's inadequate investigation of the case. Previously, separate multimillion-dollar compensations were also paid by USA Gymnastics, the US Olympic Committee, and Michigan State University.
