Trump stated that Ukraine and Russia should negotiate the end of the war themselves
US President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine and Russia should independently decide on ending the war, adding that the United States has already played its role in bringing the parties closer to potential agreements.
He said this to journalists aboard Air Force One during a flight to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, on June 5, 2026.
Responding to a question about possible negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, Trump noted that he does not oppose dialogue between the parties without US mediation.
“I don’t mind. Let them negotiate. I brought him to this position, and I think everything will be resolved,” he said.
According to Trump, the parties, in his opinion, have come closer to a possible resolution of the conflict.
“I think we are approaching where Russia and Ukraine should be. This is a war that should never have happened — it would never have happened if I were president. But I think it will be resolved,” he added.
Trump also expressed confidence that the further development of events depends primarily on agreements between Kyiv and Moscow.
As previously reported by the “Judicial and Legal Newspaper”, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote an open letter to Putin proposing a meeting to “end the war.” The Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin stated that he has reviewed the open letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy but said there is no point in a personal meeting.
