Mathematics may be removed from the list of mandatory subjects in the NMT. An alternative government bill No. 15254-1 "On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine Regarding the State Final Certification and the 2027 Admission Campaign" has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada. The document, among other things, provides for reducing the number of subjects in the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT) from four to three.

It also provides for two mandatory subjects: Ukrainian language and history of Ukraine. As for mathematics – it is proposed to be optional.

One of the bill's authors explained the need for such changes by the difficult conditions under which Ukrainian schoolchildren take entrance exams during the war.

According to her, after repeated massive shelling and sleepless nights, graduates are forced to take the NMT. At the same time, the test results significantly affect admission to higher education institutions.

In her opinion, reducing the number of subjects to three should be one of the steps aimed at retaining youth in Ukraine.

What is proposed for 2027 (decision for the martial law period)

  • The formula: two mandatory subjects (Ukrainian language and history of Ukraine) + one subject chosen by the applicant.
  • Mathematics remains but is optional for admission to relevant specialties.

"For the state, it is strategically important to support technical and engineering specialties, but introducing a mandatory mathematics exam for all specialties does not solve the problem, it only complicates it. Comprehensive strategic solutions from the Ministry of Education and Science are needed to motivate: increase the weight of the entrance score in mathematics through coefficients, raise scholarships for those studying these specialties, implement internship programs starting from the 3rd–4th year with the opportunity to earn money, increase state orders and provide grants for technical specialties, conduct quality communication on this issue, etc. Motivation solves the problem," the authors of the initiative stated.

Bill No. 15254-1 is an alternative to the government initiative regarding the state final certification and the 2027 admission campaign. Currently, the document awaits parliamentary consideration.

As previously reported by the "Judicial and Legal Newspaper", due to war risks, the government proposes to change the admission campaign rules and exempt schoolchildren from the state final certification. Since there is a need for legislative regulation of a flexible and safe admission algorithm in 2027, bill No. 15254 "On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine Regarding the State Final Certification and the 2027 Admission Campaign" was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada.
