On Tuesday, June 9, a number of holidays are celebrated in Ukraine and around the world. Several important events also took place on this day in the past.

June 9 is celebrated as International Friends Day in Ukraine and worldwide. This unofficial holiday is dedicated to friendship, mutual support, and gratitude to people who make our lives brighter and help us overcome difficulties. The exact origin of the holiday is unknown, but it has gained popularity in many countries as a reminder of the importance of sincere human relationships.

Also, June 9 is World Accreditation Day. The purpose of this day is to draw attention to the role of accreditation in ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of products, services, and processes.

Additionally, June 9 is International Archives Day. The date was chosen deliberately: on June 9, 1948, the International Council on Archives was established under the auspices of UNESCO. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of this event, International Archives Day was inaugurated in 2008.

June 9 is also celebrated as World Maintenance Day. It was established by the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management to highlight the importance of maintenance in the modern world. The goal of this day is to honor specialists who ensure the safe and uninterrupted operation of industrial equipment, transport, energy systems, hospitals, water supply, and other critical infrastructure facilities.

Moreover, June 9 is International Celtic Art Day. Celtic art is known for its intricate ornaments, knot patterns, spirals, interlacing, and symbols that often have no beginning or end—as a sign of eternity, the cyclical nature of life, and the connection between humans and nature.

What Church Holiday Is Today

On June 9, believers commemorate the Memory Day of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria. He was renowned as a fervent defender of the Orthodox teaching about Jesus Christ and actively fought against the heresies of his time. The most famous event of his ministry was his participation in the Council of Ephesus in 431, where the teachings of Nestorius were condemned. Saint Cyril upheld the truth that Jesus Christ is both true God and true Man, and that the Most Holy Virgin Mary should be called Theotokos (God-bearer).
