Ukraine aims to update approaches to the use of electric grids
The National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities (NKREKP) approved for public discussion a package of draft regulatory legal acts regarding the implementation of the provisions of the Law of Ukraine No. 4777-IX concerning the improvement of energy market functioning, the development of renewable energy, and strengthening the state's energy resilience.
The package of changes provides for updating the connection mechanisms to electric grids and new approaches to the use of existing network infrastructure to increase its accessibility and efficiency.
The key innovations are:
- introduction of a flexible connection mechanism to electric grids;
- separation of the permitted capacity into withdrawal capacity and electricity supply capacity;
- granting the operator of energy storage installations (ESI) the right to install generating units;
- introduction of broader possibilities for joint connection (cable pooling);
- increasing transparency in the formation of technical conditions and procedures for interaction between customers and system operators.
NKREKP emphasizes that the implementation of the proposed solutions will contribute to more efficient use of the existing network infrastructure, reduction of barriers to the implementation of new energy projects, and the creation of more predictable conditions for investors and market participants.
"The new connection approaches will also create conditions for more effective integration of generating capacities and ESIs, increase the flexibility of the energy system, and strengthen its resilience amid the restoration and development of Ukraine's energy sector.
NKREKP invites market participants, industry associations, the expert community, and other interested parties to join the public discussion and send their comments and proposals on the draft decisions in the prescribed manner," the Commission added.
