Three months left: Ukrainians in Poland warned about the need to update data in PESEL
The Embassy of Ukraine in Poland reminded that due to changes in Polish legislation, Ukrainian citizens need to update their data in the PESEL register.
Who needs to update data in PESEL
The update concerns Ukrainian citizens who:
- have a PESEL number with UKR status and received PESEL:
- based on a passport that has expired or was replaced;
- or without a foreign passport (including based on a birth certificate);
- after receiving the PESEL number obtained a new identity document (issued a new foreign passport), or there were changes in personal data (e.g., change of surname) that must be entered into the PESEL register.
What needs to be done
You must personally contact the commune office (Urząd gminy / miasta) and:
- submit a valid foreign passport;
- update data in the PESEL register;
- if necessary — provide fingerprints.
Deadline
The data update must be completed by August 31, 2026.
Regarding children separately
If a child:
- received a PESEL number without a foreign passport; or
- after receiving PESEL a passport was issued,
the data must be mandatorily updated.
Where to apply
To any:
- Urząd gminy or
- Urząd miasta
at the place of residence.
"Updating data in the PESEL register is necessary for the correct reflection of current personal information.
Discrepancies between data in the PESEL register and actual documents may lead to loss of confirmation of UKR status, which in turn may affect the exercise of rights related to temporary protection in Poland.
If you are abroad and do not have a valid foreign passport, you need to urgently obtain one," the embassy added.
