Crossing the road on red — you will be held more strictly accountable: Ukraine proposes to strengthen pedestrian responsibility for traffic violations
In Ukraine, it is proposed to strengthen the responsibility of pedestrians for violations of traffic rules, in particular for crossing the roadway in an unauthorized place, crossing at a prohibited traffic light signal, and other actions that create danger for road users. The relevant initiative is set out in a petition registered on the government website.
The author draws attention to the fact that daily emergency situations arise on Ukrainian roads due to pedestrians not following safety rules. According to him, such violations can lead to traffic accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
The petition text №41/010046-26ep states that strengthening control and responsibility for pedestrian traffic violations will contribute to increasing the level of discipline on the roads, reducing the number of emergency situations, and improving safety for both drivers and pedestrians themselves.
The author also emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility of all participants, so the rules must be equally followed by both drivers and pedestrians.
What are pedestrians fined for in Ukraine?
Previously, the "Judicial and Legal Newspaper" wrote that pedestrians should remember that they can be fined 255 UAH for violating traffic rules. This applies to disobedience to traffic light signals, crossing the road in unauthorized places or directly in front of approaching vehicles, as well as other violations.
Standard violation (255 UAH):
Crossing the roadway in unauthorized places.
Crossing the road directly in front of approaching vehicles.
Disobedience to traffic control signals (for example, red traffic light).
Failure to comply with other pedestrian traffic rules.
Violation that caused an emergency situation (850 UAH or community service):
If a pedestrian's actions caused an emergency situation, they face a fine of 850 UAH or community service from 20 to 40 hours.
Violation of traffic rules while intoxicated – 680 UAH.
Repeat violation: for a repeated such violation, the fine can reach 850 UAH.
If a pedestrian considers the fine unlawful, it can be appealed in court within 10 days from the date of receiving the ruling.
