Servicemen of the Sea Guard of the State Border Service of Ukraine, while patrolling the Danube, saved a rare Red Book beluga that accidentally got caught in fishing nets.

As reported by the Sea Guard, the incident occurred during border protection activities. Border guards stopped a fishing boat to check documents and inspect the vessel. During the inspection of the nets, law enforcement officers noticed the tail of a large fish in the water. It was later found that a beluga — one of the largest representatives of the sturgeon family, listed in the Red Book of Ukraine — had become entangled in the nets.

According to preliminary estimates, the fish weighed between 100 and 150 kilograms.

The border guards, together with the fishermen, carefully freed the beluga from the nets and released it back into the river. The fish was unharmed and continued its journey in its natural habitat.

Regarding the fishermen, during the inspection, law enforcement officers established that the fishing was conducted legally. No signs of poaching or other violations of environmental protection laws were found. A corresponding protocol was drawn up based on the inspection results.
