Moldova is strengthening its anti-tobacco legislation. The new rules, which will take effect on June 24, aim to protect the population not only from tobacco smoke but also from emissions of electronic cigarettes and tobacco heating devices. This is reported by Radio Moldova.

The law clarifies the list of places where smoking is prohibited, introduces clearer definitions of bans, and increases the responsibility of public space managers and employers.

According to the updated regulations, smoking is prohibited on sports grounds, in zoos, water parks, near swimming pools, on beaches, in underground pedestrian crossings, at public transport stops, and in passenger boarding and alighting zones. The ban also extends to stairwells of residential buildings, corridors, elevator cabins, other common areas of residential buildings and auxiliary structures, as well as balconies of apartments and dormitories.

Separate requirements are established regarding minimum distances for smoking. In particular, smoking and the use of electronic devices will be prohibited within a radius of 10 meters from entrances to public buildings, as well as near open windows and ventilation systems.

Another change concerns the protection of minors. The law completely prohibits the sale of nicotine pouches for oral use, including those containing synthetic nicotine.

Electronic smoking devices are subject to stricter safety and labeling requirements, and restrictions on their advertising and promotion are intensified, especially in media targeted at youth.

The updated legislative framework also provides for stricter sanctions for smoking in prohibited places and for selling tobacco products to minors. At the same time, clear obligations are established for owners and managers of public establishments to ensure a smoke-free environment and compliance with public health standards.
