Austria calls for swift action to end automatic protection for Ukrainian men of conscription age in the EU
Interior ministers of European Union countries plan to consider limiting the automatic granting of temporary protection to Ukrainian men. Austria advocates ending such status for men aged 23 to 60. This was reported by Welt.
Austria calls to "act quickly"
Austria's Minister of Internal Affairs from the conservative ÖVP party, Gerhard Karner, stated ahead of the meeting in Luxembourg that from March 2027, Ukrainian men should no longer automatically receive temporary protection status.
According to him, Ukraine needs male citizens of conscription age both for defense and to support the economy. He also noted that this approach could be beneficial for both Austria and Ukraine.
The Austrian Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that it is important to "act quickly" now to timely prepare the relevant changes and ensure legal certainty for the individuals affected.
As previously reported by the "Judicial and Legal Newspaper", Poland is promoting the idea of limiting the EU temporary protection for Ukrainian men of conscription age. However, the European Commission stated that Ukrainians already under temporary protection in the EU will not lose their status.
