Baklava, pies, and corn: what health risks does popular beach food hide
At the height of the summer season, vendors traditionally appear on beaches offering vacationers shrimp, homemade pastries, pies, corn, baklava, condensed milk rolls, and other popular treats. However, such food can pose a serious health threat, especially in hot weather when products spoil quickly.
The greatest danger comes from products that require adherence to certain temperature storage conditions. In particular, boiled shrimp, pies with meat, cheese, or egg fillings, and creamy desserts can become a favorable environment for bacterial growth. If such products remain for a long time under direct sunlight or are transported without refrigeration equipment, the risk of food poisoning significantly increases.
Experts emphasize that when buying food on the beach, consumers practically cannot verify where exactly it was made, whether sanitary standards were followed during preparation, and how long the product was kept without proper cooling. Seafood, dairy products, creamy desserts, and meat dishes are especially dangerous.
Symptoms of food poisoning can appear just a few hours after consuming poor-quality food. The most common signs include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weakness, and fever. Children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses may suffer the most severe poisoning.
To minimize risks, experts advise avoiding buying products from informal vendors who cannot confirm the origin of the goods and storage conditions. It is safer to choose packaged industrially produced products with intact packaging and a specified expiration date.
On the beach, it is better to prefer bottled water, packaged snacks, dry biscuits, fruits that can be washed independently, or products from official retail points where sanitary requirements are observed.
